Daily practice report

On day three of practice, there wasn’t much new to report, but it was the first day the team was in pads, which had Coach Joker Phillips smiling. “You get to see who will put their face on people,” he said.

Phillips was again asked about the quarterback race between Maxwell Smith, Morgan Newton and freshmen Patrick Towles and Jalen Whitlow, to which the coach had not much new to add.

“It’s still hard to evaluate after three days, especially when you’re installing,” he said. “We’ll take it slow. Two weeks before I’d like to get it done. We have seven days of install to build up to the first scrimmage.”

Phillips said he’s seen discouraging and encouraging things from all four players, but seemed more pleased than displeased.

“I like the leadership we have out of that position,” he said. “All four of those guys have great leadership, great presence. Those are the things that are encouraging.”
