UK in pre-season polls

Several of pre-season womens’ basketball polls have been released in the few weeks and the Kentucky women have been voted no worse than No. 12 in the nation and as high as No. 9 in three of them. The Cats, coming off the best season in school history, are ranked No. 9 by Lindy’s Basketball Annuall, No. 11 by Athlon Sports and No. 12 by the Sporting News.

Kentucky went 28-8 overall and 11-5 in the Southeastern Conference last season, advancing to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Cats return four starters from that team, including reigning SEC Player of the Year Victoria Dunlap, SEC Freshman of the Year A’dia Mathies as well as shooting guard Keyla Snowden and point guard Amber Smith, who is out indefinitely after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament this summer. The Sporting News named Dunlap a pre-season First Team All-American.

Defending national champion Connecticut is ranked No. 1 in all of the polls. Tennessee, which won the SEC last season, is in the top five in each.
