Selection Monday

Here live in Coach Matthew Mitchell’s basement with the team and coaches getting ready to watch the Women’s Basketball Selection Show on ESPN. The players seem loose, laughing, playing pool. Mitchell has been upstairs in the kitchen with his wife Jenna (maybe preparing to shoot an episode of the Coach’s Kitchen?).

We are five minutes from the start of the show.

  • Georgia is the first SEC team in the field as a five seed. Vanderbilt is a six seed facing DePaul. On DePaul’s team is Anna Martin, a former standout at Lexington Christian. Playing for Vandy is senior Merideth Marsh.
  • Kentucky is a four seed headed right down the road to Louisville. The Cats will face No. 13 seed Liberty. Looming in the wings is No. 5 seed Michigan State, which coincidentally beat UK in the second round last time they were in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Cats will play Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Freedom Hall. They got their highest seed since 1983. The No. 1 seed in that bracket is Nebraska and the No. 2 seed is Notre Dame, which has former Lexington Catholic standout Natalie Novosel.
